DJ Meri and P.Julm make up the production and DJ Duo.  Originally paired together as the residents of Estonia’s VIBE, they have quickly caught the attention of such noted superstars as Josh Wink, John Digweed, and Roger Sanchez, among others.  This duo moves further from the original term of house music. Their sound typically has a deep, bass filled tribal, soulful and vocal groove, yet their mixes also incorporate breaks, dark vibes and tech edge.

If you can find it on-line, their appearance on John Digweeds KISS 100 show was excellent (July 4, 2004).  “Tallinn Express” is the 19th installment of NRK records “Night Life”, and this single disc mix highlights take on house music made by The Rulers of the Deep.

Notable in this mix is their use of great overlays, which are present from the very outset.  There is a tribal vibe to this mix that has lots of energy without seeming hyperkinetic.  They also maintain a strong bass line throughout the mix, but keep the track selection varied and very listenable.

However, the mix does not stay at the 128bpm range throughout.   I particularly like how they have slowed down the mix in the last ten minutes of the mix with “Another New Day” by Jazzanova and “All Things to All Men” a jazzy rap number by The Cinimatic Orchestra with Roots Manuva.

This is an excellent single disc mix set and is a great precursor to their original release scheduled for 2005.  This disc may be a little tough to find due to the limited production run by NRK records.  However, if you find it, I’m sure you’ll agree that Rulers of the Deep are a DJ/Producer duo to keep an eye on in the next year or so.
